Extreme temperatures, especially cold ones, can affect the developing process of a polaroid picture. In January 2024, Finland was struck by extreme cold weather, with temperatures down to -30° C in the region where I stayed. The unique distortions that sometimes occurred during development are clearly visible in most of the pictures, but it was impossible to predict if and where they would appear. I was forced to embrace that unpredictability and let go of control. But it’s that same unpredictability that defines the magic of instant film and that reminds us of the magic and the harsh nature of Finnish landscape in winter.
